The Scranton Eagles earned some hardware as the Empire Football League has announced its player awards and all-star teams for the 2007 season. Veteran linebacker George Romiti, the EFL's leading tackler the past three seasons, made first-team defense and was chosen the Western Division's defensive MVP for the second straight season. Quarterback Ted Wallingford picked up two honors, becoming the second straight Eagle to be named the division's Offensive Rookie of the Year as well as nabbing a berth on the EFL Western Division's first team. Joining Wallingford on the first-team offense are center Jeremy Shaffer, tight end Matt Williams and wide receiver Louis Verdetto. Free safety Cory Champi was the lone Eagle to be named to the first team on defense. Coach Mike Arcure and linebackers Nick Parlanti and Jim Shaffer were awarded spots on the second team. Kicker Scott Perry, who played only half a season, as well as defensive back Rob Wehner, running backs Gary Visnofsky and Phil Ross, defensive lineman Chris Clancy and offensive lineman T.J. Conserette were accorded honorable mention. Contact the writer:mcoons@timesshamrock.com |

The Watertown Red and Black of the Empire Football League (10-3) ended their season with a 21-6 loss to the Monroe County Sting (13-3) in the second round of the Harvest Bowl national tournament this past weekend.
(PRWEB) November 13, 2007 -- The Watertown Red and Black (10-3) ended their season with a 21-6 loss to the Monroe County Sting (13-3) in the second round of the Harvest Bowl national tournament this past weekend. The Red and Black (10-3) trailed 21-0 before scoring its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 47-yard pass play from quarterback Doug Black to receiver Lester Cole. Anthony Noel rushed for 62 yards on 17 carries for the Red and Black.
The Monroe County Sting, shut out by Watertown during the preseason, came into this game with two big victories, having won the New York Amateur Football League title, 27-14, over the previously unbeaten Central New York (Syracuse) Express Oct. 27. Last week, the Sting beat the Albany MetroMallers 12-7 in the first round of the Harvest Bowl.
The Red and Black hadn't played since an Oct. 13 loss when Vermont defeated Watertown by the unusual score of 9-8 to win the EFL Championship. Both EFL teams decided to extend their seasons by participating in post season tournaments. The Watertown team did score more points (325) than any EFL team, and allowed the least (88).Watertown finished with an EFL best 2,196 rushing yards.
Pregame ceremonies were held recognizing Veterans Day and recognizing Coach Dave Connell, who was killed in Iraq, May 2007. A Delta Kiowa Warrior Helicopter from the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Drum landed near the football field prior to the game. Col. Erik Peterson, commander of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, disembarked from the helicopter and brought the game ball to midfield. As part of this very touching ceremony, Peteron participated in the coin toss prior to the start of the game to honor Coach Connell and four Watertown players from his unit who just returned from deployment in Iraq.

About the Empire Football League
In its 39th year, the Empire Football League remains committed to its mission of providing an amateur football league that supports the growth and support of amateur tackle football competitions. While the EFL consisted of 9 teams during the 2007 season, EFL Commissioner Dave Burch states that, "Based on applications received to date, we expect continued growth for the 2008 season; it should be noted that contrary to what is being touted by zealots in some circles, our league members are not seeking merger opportunities and are on solid ground as an organization."
Commissioner Burch goes on to state that, "While the EFL's philosophy has always been one of quality versus quantity, each year we continue to invite interested teams to apply to the EFL; we also have keen interest in continuing to develop relationships with other teams and leagues to foster mutual success, something we have done for the last 39 years".
"We have observed an increasing trend of semi pro organizations sprouting up in our communities, some attempting to pass themselves off as members of the EFL or as offshoots of existing EFL teams. While this is somewhat flattering, it is also very disturbing. In spite of this, we remain committed to our goal of continued focus on improvement of our league, its image and relationships in our communities."

Red & Black honor fallen coach (video clip)

By: Brian Dwyer
WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- Saturday night was a big night on the field for Watertown's Semiprofessional football team, the Red & Black. But it was a much bigger night off the field.
Before Saturday's Harvest Bowl game, the team honored former coach Dave Connell.
Connell, also a Fort Drum soldier, was serving in Iraq when he was killed in an attack in May. He would have been home from his tour this week.
To honor Connell, the team had an Army helicopter fly in, and had Colonel Eric Peterson, the commander of the 10th Combat Aviation Division, bring out the game ball and flip the coin during the coin toss.
"That was very meaningful. I've missed all these guys that were over in Iraq," Red & Black Head Trainer Sam Verbeck said. "I miss Dave a lot. He was a good friend, a very good guy, a great coach. He was a great guy to be around and a great father to his kids."
The Red & Black have four members of its team that did make it home from their stint in Iraq. They played Saturday night for the first time in more than a year.

Fanfare doesn't last long for Red & Black at Harvest Bowl
The pregame ceremonies may have been the highlight for the Watertown Red and Black Saturday night at Watertown High School. It was nearly all downhill after that as the Monroe County Sting ended the Red and Black season with a 21-6 victory in the second round of the Harvest Bowl national tournament.
A Delta Kiowa Warrior Helicopter from the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Drum landed near the football field prior to the game. Col. Erik Peteron, commander of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, embarked from the helicopter and brought the game ball to midfield. Peteron participated in the coin toss prior to the start of the game.
Monroe County Sting quarterback Doby Howard took charge after that as he threw for two touchdown passes. Derrick Davis scored the other Sting touchdown on a 6-yard run.
It was the Red and Black's first game since mid-October when they lost to Vermont 9-8 in the Empire Football League championship game.
Black started at quarterback over regular-season starter Todd Kiechle on a hunch by Red and Black coach George Ashcraft.
"We thought we could be successful with our passing game with Black," Ashcraft said. "It didn't work out."
Black was 6-for-24 in the air for 78 yards with most of the yardage coming on the touchdown pass to Cole.
"It was the first time I've played in a game since October of last year," Black said. "I was a little rusty and it was tough to get it going."
Kiechle, who saw considerable playing time as a receiver, saw action at quarterback in the first half, fumbling twice after long gains. One fumble ended a drive inside the Sting's 20 yard-line. Kiechle didn't make any excuses for the turnovers.
"I put the ball on the ground twice when we were moving the ball," Kiechle said. "I think we all played as hard as we could. This is a national tournament and you can't make mistakes in big games like tonight."
The Sting (13-3) scored its first touchdown on a 39-yard, four-play drive with Howard passing in the end zone to Bernard Williams on the final play of the first quarter.
The visitors opened the second half with a scoring drive that covered 66 yards with Davis scoring on a short run. Early in the fourth quarter, Howard teamed up with Willie Givens on a pass play that covered 22 yards.
While Howard had some success running the ball, he did get sacked four times. Ben Pritchard, who returned last week from Iraq, had two sacks as did teammate Greg Roberson.
"Maybe not playing in four weeks or practicing that much since our last game hurt us tonight," Ashcraft said. "The turnovers hurt us. It wasn't meant to be. I am proud of the guys that were here all year. In the end, we had a really great year."

AMSTERDAM — The Amsterdam Zephyrs semi-pro football team wrapped up its 2007 Empire Football League season with a 5-6 record. In recognition of their on-field performance, nine members of the team were honored by the EFL by being selected to its first team all-star squad, while 14 members were selected to the second team.
Evan Degeorgio earned first team honors at two positions, tight end and punter, while Alvaro Montes was selected the first team place kicker.
Wide receiver Cedric Pearman and Elijah White garnered honors respectively as wide receiver and running back. The Zephyrs offensive line also was recognized with Kelvin Vasquez earning first-team honors at guard and Bob VanHoesen at tackle.
Rafael Nicosia and John Sausville were selected to the defensive first team. Nicosia was the top choice at nose tackle and Sausville earned first-team honors at linebacker.
White also was named the Empire Football League offensive rookie of the year.
"We had a very good team this year," coach Dom Ruggeri said. "We had a couple of games get away from us at the end of the season, but I thought the all-star list was accurate. We had a lot of players have very good seasons and that is a credit to them, the whole coaching staff and the Zephyrs organization itself."
Pearman also received second team offense honors as a return specialist. He is joined on the second team offensive team by linemen Frank Pease (guard), Bob Lofferdo (guard) and centers Ed Bauman and Jay Garvey. Mike Philo was selected at second team fullback and Ken Schaefer was selected second-team quarterback.
Tackles Jason Majestic and Dwight Chasten were selected to the second-team on defense, while Rich Johnson, Jeremiah Newborn, Eugene Maye and Luke Posniewski were selected second-team defensive backs. End Rick Halest rounds out the Zephyrs' second-team defensive honorees.

AMSTERDAM — After two seasons as head coach of the Amsterdam Zephyrs semi-pro football team, Dominic Ruggeri has resigned.
"It was a difficult decision for me, but I need to spend more time with my family and would not be able to devote the time necessary to do the job properly," Ruggeri said. "We start working toward the next season recruiting in February and working right through November. It would not be fair to the team or the organization."
Zephyrs' team president Tony Marotta approached Ruggeri to coach the team when the organization reformed and joined the Empire Football League in 2006.
Ruggeri was named the EFL Coach of the Year in his first season on the sidelines and guided the team to a 5-6 record this season before falling to the Chateauguay Titans 19-17 in the opening round of the EFL playoffs.
"We have had a lot of fun over the past two years," Ruggeri said. "I consider myself very thankful for the opportunity to coach this team. If anybody is looking to get involved in semi-pro football either as a player, coach or any level of the organization, this is a class team to be associated with."
After filing his resignation with the Amsterdam squad, Ruggeri was contacted by the Albany Metro Mallers to help out as they make a postseason run at the Harvest Bowl.
"I was approached by them a couple of days after I resigned, not before," Ruggeri said. "They fired their head coach and defensive coordinator and were looking for help to finish out the season. When their season ends, I will be done."
The Metro Mallers cut ties with the Empire Football League before the start of the 2006 season to join the North American Football League. Albany played in the Harvest Bowl last season and, after winning the 2007 NAFL title are looking to return for a second shot at the title.
The Metro Mallers were scheduled to play the Monroe County Sting this weekend in the opening round of their drive toward a return trip to Florida
