Books - Professional Football Researchers Association Outsiders II: Minor League and Independent Football 1951-1985 - by Bob Gill, Steve Brainerd and Tod Maher. Following the pattern set with Outsiders I (which covered 1923-1950), this volume covers the independent minor leagues of professional football from 1951 through 1985. Only semipro leagues existed after 1985, and so the two volumes of Outsiders cover the complete history of 20th century football below the National Football League. Many players in these leagues played in the hope that they might get a chance to move up to the NFL and many achieved that dream. This volume contains histories and yearly statistical summaries for the top minor leagues of the period, plus the World Football League, which has a claim to major league status, and the United States Football League, which was clearly a major league. It also includes yearly summaries for the best of the lesser leagues, which featured a good number of interesting players in their own right. I recently shared excerpts from this book (page 41) with Chuck McElligott, AFA Hall of Fame Class of 1999. He shared with me the following story:…How cool is that!!! Claude watts and I played together in '67 for the ill-fated Akron Vulcans. A genuinely nice person, I next saw him at Bengals camp in 1969 after being released and before being recalled by the Chargers. The next time we crossed paths was in 1973, I believe, and he was playing for the Chambersburg Cardinals. I was pleased to see him in NFL Films' story and follow-up of the Pottstown Firebirds by Phil Tuckett (a former wide receiver teammate at San Diego) and an obviously talented writer and cinematographer. And the connections go on and on... Smartphone QR Codes QR codes have been around for a while, and many big corporations use them. In the past six months, though, small companies in the U.S. have flocked to the technology, thanks to services that let them easily create codes. Meanwhile, numerous phones, including many Androids and BlackBerrys, come with an app that reads QR codes. (Others, like the iPhone, must download the software.) Scanbuy Inc., a New York company that develops and manages QR codes, estimates that 30 million people in the U.S. have a code-reader app on their phone.
Stay tuned for more QR codes from the AFA as we rollout raffles, lottery drawings, videos and other interesting info via these codes. By the way, we already have ads with our code in the NY Jets & Giants Gameday Yearbook Programs.
To test our code, just scan the QR code to the right with your Smartphone. | | | | | | About the American Football Association: The American Football Association is a national 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax exempt corporation in its 31st year of operation and is dedicated to the advancement of adult (semi-pro) football from coast-to-coast.
