The Watertown Red and Black's path to a repeat Empire Football League championship once appeared free of obstruction.

Zephyrs hit the road to face Red and Black
August 28, 2010
AMSTERDAM — After getting an unexpected bye week last week when the Broome County Dragons franchise folded their team, the Amsterdam Zephyrs will face the same team tonight that they played two weeks ago in the Watertown Red and Black. The Zephyrs dropped a 31-27 heartbreaker to the previously undefeated Red and Black until they lost to Plattsburgh last weekend, creating a three-way tie at the top of the Empire Football League between Watertown, Plattsburgh, and Vermont all with identical 5-1 records. While Watertown was up in Plattsburgh last Saturday, Amsterdam had a week off to rest and recuperate for the stretch run. "The week off works good for us as far as injuries are concerned," Amsterdam vice president Rick Sager said. "It gives us a little bit longer to rest and we added a couple of players so that's going to give them a chance to get into the rhythm of the way we do things and the routes down.
Stars trying not to look ahead  - The Plattsburgh North Stars know a win against the New York Stallions would set up a showdown with Vermont.
Zephyrs return to action at Watertown
By MICHAEL KELLY

All that's changing from the team's last game is where the Amsterdam Zephyrs are playing the Watertown Red and Black.
The two teams met on Aug. 14, a back-and-forth contest that saw the Zephyrs fall at Lynch Literacy Academy by a score of 31-27. While the Red and Black played this past week — a loss to the Plattsburgh North Stars — the Zephyrs had a bye thanks to a forfeit win by way of the now defunct Broome County Dragons, leaving them nothing to think about but how to avenge their most recent loss when they head to Watertown this Saturday.
The Zephyrs (2-4) played likely their best game against the Red and Black (5-1) when the two teams met a couple weeks ago, scoring at will after the insertion of new quarterback, Scott Lawson. The new man under center threw four touchdowns and gained the team 220 yards through the air.
"He's phenomenal," said Amsterdam offensive coordinator Dom Ruggeri. "He's got some gas left in the tank and he said he wants to finish the season with us."
A longtime minor league and semi-pro football player, Ruggeri said Lawson has compiled hundreds of touchdowns and nearly 40,000 yards in his playing career. But, statistics aside, Ruggeri said Lawson's steady hand has really helped the team's young receiving core.
"I think it showed the guys we have talent at the receivers," Ruggeri said. "We just needed someone to pull the trigger consistently."
While Watertown will surely be looking to stop the Zephyrs' passing game after Lawson's performance against them, Ruggeri said he would not shy away from putting the game on Lawson's arm again.
"We feel we can definitely take advantage of them with the pass," Ruggeri said. "They can't cover our receivers and they know that."
Covering the Red and Black's offense is as tough an assignment the Empire Football League has to offer, easily seen when the two teams locked horns a couple weeks ago. Amsterdam defensive coordinator Bob Reynolds said his side did everything expected of them in that game, yet the Red and Black still managed more than 30 points. Reynolds said the key for his unit this Saturday is to be better prepared for when the option-based Red and Black switch up their scheme.
"We did a pretty good job stopping their run," Reynolds said. "So they're going to probably come out and pass because they had some success against us with that."
With the Red and Black's option offense seemingly figured out and Lawson guiding the offense into the end zone with regularity for the first team this season, the Zephyrs can focus on perhaps their toughest opponent this weekend — the Watertown faithful.
"Their fans are very vocal," said head coach Joe Hall. "They're behind their team 100 percent."
All three of the team's coaches told stories about past experiences playing and coaching up there, ranging from the fanatical to the criminal. Hall remarked that Watertown has drawn in the thousands in the past, with fans close enough to players to make it difficult for opposing teams to hear the plays being called; Reynolds said he remembered times when unruly fans would peg opposing players with beer cans and other objects as they stood on the sidelines.
"It's going to be real tough playing up there," Hall said.
The Zephyrs sit in fifth place in the EFL and likely need to win one of its two final games in order to secure the league's final playoff spot.

Red and Black battles to avoid Zephyrs upset
WatertownDailyTimes.com -

AMSTERDAM — The Watertown Red and Black has reached the midpoint of the Empire Football League season with a perfect record. But its latest victory was nowhere near as convincing as the first four.
Alan Dwyer scored on a run from four yards out with four minutes, 18 seconds remaining in regulation Saturday at Lynch Middle School, and the Red and Black barely hung on for a 31-27 victory over the host Amsterdam Zephyrs.
Quarterback Brian Williams and Joe Brennan gained 117 and 100 yards, respectively, on the ground to help Watertown (5-0) avoid its first EFL loss since Aug. 15 last year.

Zephyrs fall short against Watertown

August 15, 2010
AMSTERDAM — The Amsterdam Zephyrs semi-pro football team dropped a 31-27 decision to Watertown in an Empire Football League contest at Lynch Literacy Academy on ?Saturday.

Threatening to complete the upset of the Empire Football League's season, the Amsterdam Zephyrs had the ball at the undefeated Watertown Red and Black's 5-yard line with about 30 seconds left in the game. Lining up in a shotgun formation, the Zephyrs had the ball right where they wanted it — in the hands of quarterback Scott Lawson.
Playing in his first game for the team, Lawson had been brilliant. As he lined up in the shotgun down 31-27, the newcomer was 10-of-15 for 220 yards with four touchdowns.
Taking the snap, Lawson glanced around the field before flinging it to the front right corner of the end zone at his favorite target, Ace Barnhill, who already had two touchdown catches on the game. As the ball floated toward Barnhill, the sure-handed receiver temporarily freed himself from the two Watertown defenders marking him.
But only temporarily.
Barnhill could only get a hand on the ball, the two Watertown defenders draped over him as the Zephyrs sideline screamed for a penalty flag. They didn't get one, but Watertown's defense got what they were looking for — a momentum-killing goal line interception, courtesy of Brian Williams that sealed the 31-27 setback.
The Zephyrs (1-4) initially fell behind 14-0, but battled back to only trail just 17-14 at the half. The second half saw the lead see-saw back and forth between the two teams, putting on quite a show for those in attendance at Lynch Literacy Academy.
Though it was a tight back-and-forth contest that saw four second half lead changes, the game was at times marred by rough play — and language — by the players of both teams who were frequently upset with the game's officiating. Both teams drew unsportsmanlike conduct for yelling at officials, with the Zephyrs drawing multiple penalties of the like.
"Guys got to keep their mouths shut," said Zephyrs head coach Joe Hall. "Our guys needed to be disciplined."
Though, at some points it was hard to blame the Zephyrs' players for being upset. On the game's deciding play, multiple hands could be seen on Barnhill's jersey; earlier on the drive, a 50-yard run by Alex Heath (106 yards on 16 carries) had already been called back on a holding penalty.
"They were throwing [the flags] all night on us," said Hall, whose team amassed roughly 125 yards in penalties. "But we couldn't get one when we needed one."
Both sides' frustration with the referees ended up in several late hits and some legal tackles with more force than was requisitely needed. The tension between the two teams culminated in a near fight on the field following a successful extra point attempt by the Zephyrs when several players became entangled around Amsterdam's Jermell Hailel and Watertown's Steve Roy. Both players were ejected for their part in the melee.
Still, despite Amsterdam's displeasure with the referees and the final score, the team likely played their best game of the season last night. The offense scored a season-high number of points and the defense was able to make key stops against the best offense the EFL has to offer.
Williams, the Watertown defensive back who made the game-saving interception, mans the quarterback for the Red and Black's option-based offense and leads the league in rushing out of it. While he did managed two touchdown passes last night, the Zephyrs' defense limited Williams to 79 yards and kept him out of the end zone. Last week, Williams ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns in his team's 49-6 throttling of the New York (Oneonta) Stallions.
"I would have to say this is the best we have played this season," Hall said.
The Zephyrs will next play at Watertown on Aug. 28. Amsterdam was scheduled to host the Broome County Dragons this upcoming Saturday at Lynch Literacy Academy, but the game was cancelled and ruled a forfeit after the Dragons withdrew from the league.

56: MORE THAN JUST NUMBER

IN MEMORIAM: Red & Black linemen don jersey to remember Towles
TIMES SPORTSWRITER
SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 2010
Jared Cook stared at the No. 56 jersey he was about to wear as the Watertown Red and Black prepared for its season opener on July 10. He wished he didn't have to put it on, but was honored to do so.
Such emotions are a weekly occurrence this season in the Red and Black locker room.
Each of the 10 offensive lineman listed on Watertown's roster will wear No. 56 once this season in honor of former center David Towles, who died last fall in an auto accident.

Zephyrs in action tonight

The Glove Cities Colonials and Amsterdam Zephyrs are at the exact opposite points they were one week ago.
The Colonials were riding high, undefeated and carrying a 5-0 overall and 3-0 league record, before a sloppy effort gave them their first blemish of the season in a 22-14 loss to the Finger Lakes Impact out of Waterloo.
"We came out and played flat," Glove Cities coach Matt Capano said. "Hopefully we've got it out of out system. We had a nice practice on Thursday and the guys seem to be together again."
On the other hand, the Zephyrs were 0-3 before posting their first win of the season with a 19-16 over the Massena Silver and Black Raiders in Potsdam.

Zephyrs back at Lynch
By MICHAEL KELLY
Recorder Sports Staff
Coming off their first win of the season this past week against the Massena Silver and Black Raiders, the Amsterdam Zephyrs are faced with the most daunting opponent the Empire Football League has to offer — the Watertown Red and Black.
"They're a very good team," said Zephyrs (1-3) head coach Joe Hall. "We're going to need our 'A' game against them."
The undefeated Red and Black (4-0) average a shade over 29 points per game, the best in the EFL by almost a touchdown. Scarier for their opponents, the Red and Black's offense can put up a lot of points in a hurry — last week, the Red and Black scored 35 second quarter points against the New York (Oneonta) Stallions (1-3). Watertown went on to win, 49-6.
Watertown is led by its quarterback — and the EFL's leading rusher — Brian Williams, who is the focal point of his team's option-based offense.
"They run the option to perfection," Hall said, calling the offense one of the oldest and toughest to stop in the game.
The run-based offense of Watertown against the stingy Amsterdam defense should provide a fun matchup for fans this week at Lynch Literacy Academy. Defensive coordinator Bob Reynold's defense is at its best against the run, and said that the onus tonight will be on those lining up at defensive end. Reynolds said his outside linemen need to create pressure quickly on the Watertown quarterback to force his hand.
"They need to make the quarterback pitch the ball, [and] the sooner the better," Reynolds said. "A lot of times you can get a bad pitch."
But no matter how well his defense plays, Reynolds said he cannot see this Watertown team not putting up at least a decent number of points on the scoreboard. The, at times, anemic offense of the Zephyrs (10.8 points per game) will need to be able to put up points of its own in tonight's game and win the time of possession battle.
"This week the key is we got to control the clock," said Dom Ruggeri, the team's offensive coordinator. Ruggeri said the team will rely on running back Alex Heath (105 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown last week) to keep the chains moving and the Red and Black offense on the sideline.
The Zephyrs' other premier runner, Elijah White, will miss his second consecutive game with turf toe.
Still, though faced with a stiff challenge in tonight's game, Hall said the team was in good spirits this week after notching its first win of the season, defeating the Silver and Black Raiders (0-4) by a score of 19-16 on the road. He said the enthusiasm on the team's boisterous ride home after last Saturday's game had carried over to this week.
"The bus ride home was great," Hall said. "The guys were all happy and pumped about [the win]."
The Zephyrs had an extra development to be happy about this past week — the Broome County Dragons announced they had folded, with the team's remaining games being ruled as forfeits, an EFL representative confirmed in an e-mail. In an e-mail to other league owners, Dragons' owner Karol Cronin said her team could not persist further "due to a lack of financial resources and unplanned expenses."
Amsterdam was scheduled to play Broome County two times in the coming weeks, which will be counted as forfeits when those weeks roll around. When accounted for, the Zephyrs will pick up two wins that puts them in the lead for the league's fourth and last playoff spot.
"You hate to pick up wins like that," Hall said, saying he would rather have seen his team get two more chances at game action. "[But], that was a big lift for us."
Tonight's game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Zephyrs travel to Massena
AMSTERDAM - Last Saturday the Amsterdam Zephyrs gave the Empire Football League top team, the Plattsburgh North Stars all they could handle but came up on the short end of the 6-3 final score. Tonight, the 0-3 Zephyrs will look to put their first win of the season in the books as they travel to Massena to take on the Silver and Black Raiders.

Against the North Stars, the Zephyrs defense shone and put together a strong offensive drive with five minutes remaining only to be hit by a penalty after driving deep into Plattsburgh territory that took them out of field goal range.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Potsdam High School. The Zephyrs return to their home turn at the Lynch Literacy Academy Aug. 14 and Aug. 21 for Empire Football League games against the Watertown Red and Black and Broome County Dragons respectively.
