PLATTSBURGH — On the strength of another dominant performance from its running attack, the Watertown Red and Black remained undefeated Saturday night.
Anthony Noel led the charge, rushing for 177 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries as Watertown outlasted Vermont 24-13 in Empire Football League action at Bailey Avenue Field.
Quarterback Brian Williams added 66 rushing yards and a score as the Red and Black (3-0) totalled 343=2 0yards on the ground to follow last week's 411-yard showing.
"Our offensive line seems to be getting the blocks, and keeping the holes open long enough," head coach George Ashcraft said. "And the backs have just been hitting the right holes the last few weeks."
Vermont, coming off back-to-back championship game appearances and the 2007 title, dropped to 1-3. Saturday marked Watertown's first victory over the Ice Storm since 2006.
Greg Roberson registered a pair of sacks and four tackles, while Mike Dumaw turned in five tackles, and Anthony Tyrkala had an interception on defense for Watertown.
"I do believe we're solid defensively," said Ashcraft, whose team hosts Vermont Saturday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. "Even though we gave up a few big plays. This is the first time we beat t his team in three years. I definitely think we've turned the corner from last year."
