Amsterdam Zephyrs win preseason opener
Amsterdam Zephyrs win preseason opener

AMSTERDAM — A 50-yard pass from Eric Johnson to Michael Harrington in the first quarter proved to be the only scoring as the Amsterdam Zephyrs posted a 7-0 win over the Massachusetts State Warriors in a preseason game Saturday night at Lynch Middle School.
“The defense played awesome,” Amsterdam coach Dominic Ruggeri said. “The offensive line ground it out and we moved the ball well, but we just misfired a little offensively.”
It was the first on-field action in Amsterdam in two years after the Zephyrs disbanded prior to last season.
“The crowd was great. The city was great and the field was great,” Ruggeri said. “We had 48 guys suited up tonight and we were fired up and ready to get back on the field.
“They’re [Massachusetts] a tough team out of the New England Amateur Football League. This was a big test for us.”
The game also served as a benefit for Broadalbin’s John Gurga, who was badly burned this spring, with a portion of the ticket sales going to the family.
